Do Natural Remedies Work for Varicose Veins?

The symptoms of varicose veins vary significantly from one patient to the next. Some may have few, if any, symptoms while others can develop severe symptoms.  These severe symptoms may include swelling of the legs and ankles, pain or discomfort, fatigue, or changes in the skin colour.

Regardless of the appearance of veins and the severity of symptoms, varicose veins should never be thought of as merely a cosmetic problem. Even in mild cases, the patient should be evaluated by a doctor to determine if there are hidden problems that could surface later.

It is common for people who are just beginning to experience signs or symptoms of varicose veins to look for natural remedies as a means of treating the symptoms.

Popular Supplements for Vein Disease

A variety of herbs and extracts are used in supplements for vein disease, including:

  • Horse Chestnut Seed Extract – claims to promote constriction of the veins and thinning of the blood, thus preventing clots

  • Butcher’s Broom Root – claims to reduce swelling of the veins and chronic venous insufficiency

  • Prickly Ash – claims to improve blood circulation in people with varicose veins

  • Pot Marigold – claims to relieve itching, dryness and ulcers

Some companies also offer mixtures of several of these and other ingredients that are sold as natural remedies specifically made to enhance vein health.

  • Flavonoids, such as grape seed extract

Flavonoids are classified as food supplements. They come mainly from plant sources such as citrus fruits and, and they contain antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. Daflon, (MPFF), is another new naturally based compound that some feel eases aching and swelling of the legs after a few months of treatment. There is some research to support this claim.

The controversy over whether natural remedies work for varicose veins comes, in great part, from the lack of rigorous data available on which to support claims of effectiveness. Most of the herbs and extracts listed above have been shown to have no real impact on varicose veins.

In addition, natural supplements can cause side effects, particularly when they are taken with other medications. The greatest concern of all is that people may use these supplements to treat their symptoms and ignore the need for medical treatment for the root cause of their condition.
Supplements on their own will not get rid of your varicose veins. To actually eliminate varicose veins, doctor today offer a number of highly effective, minimally invasive procedures that require virtually no recovery time with nearly no risk to the patient.

A healthy diet and active lifestyle are natural methods of improving varicose vein symptoms, and the use of certain well-researched supplements such as Daflon may help some people suffering from varicose veins. Always work together with your doctor to determine the best approach to treating your varicose veins and not just the symptoms.

Varicose veins are leg veins which do not pump blood effectively back to the heart and can be often seen as bulging veins just underneath your skin on either leg. These varicose veins have valves in them which are not working effectively so that blood which is meant to be pushed towards the heart, leaks downwards toward the legs. There are other leg veins which are still working, so blood does eventually arrive through other routes to your heart. However, varicose veins do exert added pressure on your circulatory system. Endovenous Laser Ablation is a Varicose Veins Laser Treatment performed in our clinic under local anaesthetic. This new procedure is an excellent treatment option for most patients with varicose veins and is considered slightly more effective than surgery but without the need for hospitalization. Read More.

This is an endovenous treatment (meaning treating the vein on the inside). It is generally accepted to be associated with less pain and bruising than endovenous laser ablation. It is a “gold standard” form of treatment for large varicose leg veins treatment as the procedure requires no hospitalization or time of work yet is at least as effective as surgery. Read More.

Venaseal™ or ‘superglue’ treatment by Sapheon is the latest surgery free procedure that uses a medical adhesive to safely and effectively treat varicose veins. Unlike other treatments, Venaseal™ does not require tumescent local anaesthetic around the vein, so there is usually only one local anaesthetic injection. The Venaseal™ non surgical treatment procedure also eliminates the use of heat (or thermal energy) so there is virtually no risk of nerve or skin injury or any major reaction to the anaesthetic. Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy allows our doctors to visually guide and monitor a needle to the exact source of the incompetent vein (valve) to be injected. By using ultrasound we can treat more quickly and safely larger and deeper veins that once required more invasive surgical treatment. Foam sclerotherapy is the new form of delivering the sclerosing agent that allows us to treat larger varicose veins that might be unsuccessfully treated with conventional sclerotherapy. The foam solution has the consistency of ‘shaving cream’, which improves treatment in two distinct ways. Read More.
