Frequently Asked Questions

Patients with as aching, throbbing, leg swelling or pigmentation are generally advised to see a vein specialist for assessment and possible treatment. There are some instances that treatment is not recommended including severe venous disease affecting the deep venous system.

The procedures involve very little pain if any. If you are anxious EMLA numbing cream can be applied to your veins 45mins before the procedure. Patients who are highly anxious can request medication (usually low dose valium) or a nerve block to numb the leg. For patients requesting these treatments a carer or relative is required to drive you back home.

Varicose veins are dysfunctional veins and to this end are impacting blood flow negatively. Removing them safely improves your circulation with many other functional veins taking over.

All treatments carried out at The Vein Institute are performed by doctors specialising in the field. New treatments in general are considered safer than surgery yet there will always be the rare possibility of complications as with any medical procedure.

Endovenous Laser therapy, Radiofrequency Ablation and Foam Sclerotherapy are excellent alternative treatment options for most patients. There is a move in Australia towards non hospital treatment of varicose veins but individual treatment options will vary which will be discussed at your initial consultation.

Usually not however exceptions will be made for particularly pressing circumstances.

Most sessions last half an hour to 45 minutes. Laser treatment usually take one hour whilst sclerotherapy treatments last 30 minutes.

The medicines are forms of strong soap which are registered in Australia as Aethoxysclerol and Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate. Both medicines are effective with millions of patients being treated world wide. Salt solutions are NOT used at The Vein Institute.A full discussion regarding the medications will happen at your first consultation.

Treatments are partly covered by Medicare however a gap payment will usually be required. Tiny spider vessels treated for cosmetic purposes are not covered by Medicare. Under Medicare rules if you reach the safety net limit 80% of medical costs can be reimbursed. The terms and costs of treatment will be discussed at your first consultation. A small deposit is required for laser therapy one week before the procedure. Patients are also able to apply for payment plans with Mac Credit.

Rarely do patients need to take time off work.

This depends on your treatment but usually 3 days on average. Some treatments require no bandaging or stockings.

We prefer that children not attend during consultation and treatment sessions owing to the medical nature of the procedures.

We are located close to train stations in most of our locations or bus routes. Alternatively there is plenty of onstreet parking next to our clinics.
