Endovenous Laser Treatment For Varicose Veins: How Does It Work?

January 2, 2020 The Vein Institute

For most of us, summer is proving to be an absolute scorcher and it is way too hot to be letting your varicose veins hold you back from wearing shorts!

Many sufferers from varicose veins prefer not to wear shorts or clothes that expose their legs, embarrassed by the appearance of their varicose veins.  And all too often we hear from patients who have put off treatment for years under the impression that the only option would be to undergo surgery.

This couldn’t be further than the truth. Indeed, the latest treatment procedure for Varicose Veins is called Endovenous Laser Ablation or EVLA for short. It allows us to treat patients in a clinic rather than a hospital. Also, as it is a non-surgical procedure, it means patients are up and walking immediately after the procedure has been completed.

In this blog post, we’ll dive deeper into the EVLA procedure to give you a better understanding of what you can expect when undergoing this procedure to remove varicose veins.

What Is Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)?

  • Endovenous Laser Treatment For Varicose Veins (EVLA) is a Laser Treatment performed in our clinic under local anaesthetic.

How Does It Work?

  • After we apply a local anaesthetic to the leg, we insert the laser into the varicose vein. In this procedure, the laser energy damages the vein wall and seals of the faulty vein. The damaged vein eventually disappears as the body reabsorbs it over time.

This video gives you an overview of how this procedure works.

How Long Does The Procedure Take?

  • Every patient is different but on average the Endovenous Laser treatment for varicose veins procedure takes 60 – 90 minutes.

Is The Procedure Painful?

  • There is a slight sting when the local anaesthetic is applied. During the laser treatment, there is a small amount of discomfort.
  • After the procedure, there is sometimes some mild soreness around the area of the leg that was treated.

Can I Walk After The Treatment?

  • Yes, you can walk after treatment.  This is one of the biggest benefits of laser treatment, the downtime in comparison to surgery is minimal.

Do I need To Wear Compression Stockings?

  • We require our patients to wear compression bandages for 3 days after treatment.

Does It Remove My Varicose Veins Completely?

  • We have a 98% success rate of completely removing the varicose vein. Below is an example of the outcome we have achieved through EVLA.

Don’t just take it from us, recently A Current Affair on Channel 9 ran a story on the treatment of Varicose Veins, take a look at what patients had to say about the success of their treatment.

Make An Informed Decision.

You should not consider any medical procedure without due diligence. Also, this is why all our patients undergo an initial first consultation with our Director of Medical Training, Dr Zil Yassine. During this consultation, an ultrasound scan of your legs is taken. This gives us a thorough understanding of the severity of the varicose veins. Also, this allows Dr Yassine to prescribe you with the most suitable treatment program.

After your first consultation, you will have all the information to allow you to make an informed decision as to whether not the treatment program is suitable for you and your circumstances.

To book in for your first consultation and to discuss our treatment program, call 1300 535 017 or contact us to receive a call back from us.
