Superglue for varicose veins is as effective as surgery. Really?

A special type of superglue for varicose veins can be as effective as surgery for your veins. VenaSealTM represents the next generation in varicose vein treatment and permanently seals varicose veins shut permanently.

Like most modern vein procedures such as sclerotherapy and endovenous laser ablation, the goal of VenaSealTM is to seal the varicose vein shut. The body then naturally reroutes the blood through healthy veins in the area, while reabsorbing the shut vein. The reabsorption causes the vein to disappear from sight.

Like the other procedures, VenaSealTM is minimally invasive, meaning it involves only a tiny incision or a needle stick. The procedure is performed right at our clinic, with no need to go to a hospital or have an anaesthetic.

What’s new about VenaSealTM:

  • Only one local anaesthetic injection is needed usually.

  • There is no need for heat or thermal energy as with other procedures, so there is virtually no risk of nerve or skin injury.

  • As the glue sets in a few minutes, there is no lengthy recovery process – you’ll be up and on your way with no restrictions on your activities.

  • There is no need to wear compression stockings.

The result of VenaSealTM is healthier legs, improved circulation, and reduction or elimination of the risk factors and annoying symptoms that accompany varicose veins.

What is VenaSealTM made of?

VenaSealTM is a type of glue known as a “cyanoacrylate”. Cyanoacrylates are not new; this type of glue has been safely used to repair wounds and skin incisions for over 50 years. It has also been used to seal diseased arteries shut. VenaSealTM is simply a new application for a well-known adhesive substance currently used by physicians and surgeons worldwide.

How effective is VenaSealTM?

Numvenaseal_varicose_veins_treatment_clinic_medical_superglueerous studies have shown VenaSealTM to have at least a 92% success rate over 5 years, which is equivalent to the current standard endovenous laser or radiofrequency ablation procedures. However, VenaSealTM has the advantages of not requiring laser or radiofrequency energy, which carry some risks of skin burns or nerve damage, and no need to wear compression stockings after the procedure.

How does the procedure work?

On arrival at our clinic, your leg will be painlessly scanned to find the varicose vein(s) to be sealed shut. After administering a small amount of local anesthetic to your leg, a tiny catheter will be inserted into the vein to deliver the VenaSealTM glue. Vein(s) will shut with in a few minutes, and a band-aid will be applied to the injection point. You can then return to your usual activities immediately.

After 3 weeks, you will have a follow-up appointment at our clinic to ensure that the treatment was successful. If needed, smaller branch veins can then be treated with sclerotherapy. At 6 weeks after treatment, you will have a final scan to ensure that your procedure has been completely effective.

TREATMENTS

Varicose veins are leg veins which do not pump blood effectively back to the heart and can be often seen as bulging veins just underneath your skin on either leg. These varicose veins have valves in them which are not working effectively so that blood which is meant to be pushed towards the heart, leaks downwards toward the legs. There are other leg veins which are still working, so blood does eventually arrive through other routes to your heart. However, varicose veins do exert added pressure on your circulatory system. Endovenous Laser Ablation is a Varicose Veins Laser Treatment performed in our clinic under local anaesthetic. This new procedure is an excellent treatment option for most patients with varicose veins and is considered slightly more effective than surgery but without the need for hospitalization. Read More.

This is an endovenous treatment (meaning treating the vein on the inside). It is generally accepted to be associated with less pain and bruising than endovenous laser ablation. It is a “gold standard” form of treatment for large varicose leg veins treatment as the procedure requires no hospitalization or time of work yet is at least as effective as surgery. Read More.

Venaseal™ or ‘superglue’ treatment by Sapheon is the latest surgery free procedure that uses a medical adhesive to safely and effectively treat varicose veins. Unlike other treatments, Venaseal™ does not require tumescent local anaesthetic around the vein, so there is usually only one local anaesthetic injection. The Venaseal™ non surgical treatment procedure also eliminates the use of heat (or thermal energy) so there is virtually no risk of nerve or skin injury or any major reaction to the anaesthetic. Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy allows our doctors to visually guide and monitor a needle to the exact source of the incompetent vein (valve) to be injected. By using ultrasound we can treat more quickly and safely larger and deeper veins that once required more invasive surgical treatment. Foam sclerotherapy is the new form of delivering the sclerosing agent that allows us to treat larger varicose veins that might be unsuccessfully treated with conventional sclerotherapy. The foam solution has the consistency of ‘shaving cream’, which improves treatment in two distinct ways. Read More.
