Men are almost as likely as women to develop varicose veins. However, we often think about the disease as a cosmetic issue which only effects women. 1. Preparation

Q: If my doctor has determined that EVLA is the best treatment option, do I need to do anything to prepare for the procedure?

No preparation is necessary. If your procedure is scheduled for the morning, be sure to eat breakfast and take any normal medications You should, however, wear loose-fitting pants or sweats because your legs will be wrapped with elastic bandages after the procedure.

2. The actual treatment

Q: Will the laser damage or burn my skin or leave scars and bruising?

The vascular lasers we use for EVLA are specifically designed for medical use and target the pigment in blood, so the diseased blood vessels are destroyed without affecting surrounding skin. There is no risk of scarring because insertion of the laser itself requires just a tiny puncture. Some patients may experience temporary bruising, but this resolves itself in a few weeks.

3. Post-procedure

Q: What should I expect immediately after the procedure?

Most patients return to their normal activities immediately after treatment, although we recommend that for the first 48 hours you avoid aerobics, jogging, or long periods of sitting and standing. We also recommend that all patients wear compression socks for a minimum of three days after treatment, because that enhances the healing process. There is rarely any residual pain, but if there is you will be able to treat it with ibuprofen or other over-the-counter medications.

4. Recovery time

Q: How long will it take after the procedure until my varicose veins are completely gone?

Most patients report that negative symptoms caused by their varicose veins (such as swollen legs and chronic tiredness) go away very quickly. It does, however, take some time for the treated veins to be absorbed into surrounding tissue, so depending on their original size it may take a few weeks for all traces of them to fully disappear.

5. Will I get varicose veins again?

Q: After my treatment, will my varicose veins be gone forever?

When varicose veins are removed with EVLA, they are closed forever, and cannot grow back. To make sure of this, we recommend that patients have a review scan 1-2 weeks from the date of laser treatment. Over time, there is a minor possibility that new varicose veins may form, so we also recommend dropping in for periodic examinations to make sure that isn’t happening.
