What causes varicose veins?

Many people ask us what causes varicose veins and as advanced as science is, the exact cause remains unknown. What we do know is that there are some factors that can be associated with the development of varicose veins, and these include: Varicose veins often run in families, so there is a genetic factor. Ageing is another risk factor. Use of the oral contraceptive pill might also be a factor. Standing or sitting for long periods of time can contribute to varicose veins’ development. Multiple pregnancies might also lead to varicose veins.

Our Doctors

Dr Zil Yassine is the founder and Medical Director of The Vein Institute.

With over 15 years of experience under his belt, Dr Zil is dedicated and passionate about vascular health and providing non-invasive treatments for his patients.

Dr Zil proudly holds a Bachelor of Medicine (UNSW), Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound in Phlebology (ACP), and is a fellow of FRACGP, F(Phleb UK).

Dr Stella Tang is a Consultant Doctor at The Vein Institute.

She has been a doctor for over 10 years already. Her medical experience includes women’s health and vascular health.

Dr Tang has a Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery in 2008 from University of Newcastle and Fellowship from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2013.
